Medical Mayhem:
Strategies to accurately depict medical fact in your fiction

Come and learn all about the common mistakes writers make when depicting a medical scene in their stories. We will analyze published works and study where they went awry. We will also go over research strategies that will help keep writers on the right track.

Leslie Pfeil is a nurse specializing in critical care and emergency nursing for seventeen years and is currently employed as a pediatric emergency nurse at The Children’s Hospital in Colorado. She holds specialized certification for critical care nursing and has taught CPR and advanced resuscitation courses for over two decades. Leslie was published in 2006 in the medical textbook Abusive Head Trauma in Infants and Children: A Medical, Legal and Forensic Approach. Her chapter was the only nursing contribution and focused on caring for the abusive head trauma patient in the emergency and critical care settings. Leslie lectures extensively to medical professionals from EMS workers to physicians in the areas of pediatric assessment, management of pediatric emergencies and identification and treatment of child abuse injuries. In addition, she is a finalist in the 2010 ACFW Genesis Contest. She belongs to the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the American Christian Fiction Writer’s groups. She writes under the pen-name Jordyn Redwood.

One Sheet Contest Update

Thank you to all who entered the Mile High Scribes’ one sheet contest! We were very impressed with the quality of the entries we received.

After careful deliberation, Anne Lang Bundy was selected as our winner. Her one sheet for Beside the Throne stood out in each of our three categories: creativity, visual impact, and ability to communicate a message.

Anne Lang Bundy’s debut fiction work caps 25 years of Bible education and 30 years of professional writing. She's received recognition for astute biblical insights (published on two blogs), for drama ministry, and as speaker and teacher to women and children (including preaching as a jail lay minister). Anne and husband John live in Michigan with their five children.

Mile High Scribes’ One Sheet Contest
Guidelines and Rules

This is your opportunity to prepare for conference season! Mile High Scribes, the South Denver Chapter of ACFW, is hosting a one-sheet contest. Use your creativity to develop a one-sheet that communicates the heart of your story, and you will be eligible to win a full manuscript edit!

PRIZE
One winner will be selected from the pool of entrants to receive a substantive edit of their full manuscript by Kristine Pratt of Written World Communications.

SELECTION PROCESS
All entries will be evaluated by the Mile High Scribes board members based on the following criteria:
- Creativity
- Visual impact
- Ability to communicate a message

Five finalist entries will be chosen. One winner will then be selected by Agent Andrea Heinecke of Alive Communications. (Please note that Andrea will not be considering any of the submissions for representation.)

RULES/ELIGIBILITY
- The contest is open to both published and unpublished authors.
- This contest is open to fiction manuscripts only.
- Each entry must be accompanied by a $15 entry fee.
- Entrants will not receive any feedback or advice on their entry.
- All proceeds from the contest go to Mile High Scribes.
- Your novel does not need to be complete in order for you to be eligible.
- Each entry will receive a confirmation e-mail shortly after their one sheet is received. If you do not receive an email, please contact us at contest@elaineclampitt.com to see if your entry was received.

One-Sheet Workshop

Drawing upon her professional experience in public relations and marketing, Sara will teach writers how to create a one sheet that sells an author and their story. The first half of our evening will be devoted to learning about the critical elements of a one sheet. We’ll also discuss options for layout and design that communicate both professionalism and a unique sense of style. The second half of the evening will be spent working on our one sheets together as a group. Feel free to bring your laptops and/or printouts of your one sheets.

During this workshop, the Mile High Scribes board will also announce the details of a one sheet contest that will run through March.

A lifelong storyteller, Sara Richardson is passionate about communicating reasons for hope. Previously she has been an advertising copywriter, an Internet communications manager, and a whitewater rafting guide. In addition to writing fiction, Sara has published nonfiction articles in parenting and family magazines. As a member of MOPS International, Sara enjoys speaking to moms’ groups. She earned a master’s degree in journalism from Regent University and a bachelor’s degree in writing from Bethel University.

Topic: “Gap Publishing: Written World Communications & Publishing into the Future”

Kristine Pratt has rattled around the publishing industry for a few years now. She started out as a writer, like most do. But it quickly became evident that helping others to get published was a great deal more fun and rewarding than seeing her name in print. She's apprenticed to Terry Burns of Hartline Literary Agency, and from there started pestering Jeff Gerke of Marcher Lord Press to teach her everything he knows. Throughout this all, she's worked as freelance editor and writing mentor. In the fall of 2009 with the support of her husband and five children, Kristine banded together a dozen individuals and formed Written World Communications, a traditional publishing house with an emphasis on what she calls gap publishing. In 2010 expect to see several books and magazines going into print, as WWC explodes onto the publishing scene.

A New Journey, Writing Included

The sun warms my face as I listen to the soft rustle of autumn leaves and the faraway bark of a dog while I sit on my back porch. I sigh in pleasure at the musty smell of leaves and the brightness of the clear blue sky. This moment of peace and tranquility is something new for me. My world has been the scream of an electric guitar playing the same lick over and over as I stifle the urge to knock on my son’s door one more time and ask him to please find some headphones. Or the mindless entertainment of the latest reality TV show that my daughter has on. But for now, all I hear are the sounds of my Creator’s music. This is a good thing, I tell myself.

I am adjusting to a new season in my life. This isn’t something that I can try on like a new pair of pants at the store and discard if I don’t like them. This season is here to stay. I’ve passed the “raising my children” season and am on to the “empty nest” season of life. No more running after a toddler to wipe his runny nose or waking up in the middle of the night to soothe a crying child. No more cleaning out the Big Wheel that someone decided to use as a toilet since he couldn’t be bothered to stop playing and make it to the bathroom. No more listening to a teen complain about the social injustices of high school or even youth group. This is a good thing, I tell myself.

I know that many women might think that I am crazy to not embrace this new season with abandon. Isn’t it the goal of every parent to have finished this stage of the race? I never thought I would feel like I was 18 again struggling with what to do with the rest of my life. I had already answered that question and now I am faced with it once more. Is this a good thing, I wonder? Now I can act on my interests and desires like writing and speaking. Things that have been carefully stuffed in the back of the closet like clothes that don’t fit anymore but are kept because we just know that someday we’ll be able to pull them out again.

So now it is someday. I will dust off my dreams and sit on the porch to spend time reading the Word and hearing from the One who made me and knows the desires of my heart. I will take joy and pleasure in seeking Him as I start this new season that is the next step on life’s journey. And while I grieve for what once was, I look forward to experiencing all that He is setting before me. Obedience will bring fresh awareness of His long-term plan. This is a good thing, I know.

Writing As An Act of Worship

I love that time between slumber and awake when my soul is more open to HIS Voice. I especially love it when He speaks. He whispered sweet somethings to me twice this week. The first time it happened I struggled to pull out of asleep as I thought, it's another day, Lord. What should we do with it?

His immediate response was "This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!"

My heart lightened, and I soon stood in the kitchen in my nightgown making hash browns and humming to a worship CD. Now before you think I'm spiritual, or a good mom 'cause I made breakfast, or even entertain the thought that I must be a morning person, let me clarify that both of those actions are rare. Mornings and I don't get along, and I have not praised the Lord as I wish I had over this last year of struggles. It is one of my greatest regrets.

Maybe that's why I felt so inadequate as I began preparation to speak at Mile High Scribes on Writing as an Act of Worship. It wasn't a topic I picked, and my recent whining about the writing journey didn't feel at all like worship. But the Good Lord confronts that nonsense--that "I'm not good enough to serve" mentality I slip into way too easily. I'd planned to tell you how He did this, but I just found out I'm speaking again Saturday on this topic, and well . . . if you want to know the whole story, I guess you'd better come to W!W!W! at 11:00.

So instead of giving you any more hints into the content of my presentation, I'd like to challenge you to just slow down for a minute or two. Breathe in and out. Acknowledge the One who is Author of All and Most Creative Being of Eternity.

Writer- How Hungry Are You?

In the last two months, I've learned a good deal about hunger, a concept I knew very little about. I've always eaten from the brain. Head hunger. It's time to eat. I could eat. I feel like eating.

Now I am trying to listen to my stomach and let it tell me when to eat. It's a whole new world.

In learning about this, I discovered there are five levels of hunger:

Starving
Hungry
Satisfied
Full
Overfull

As I've been contemplating this, it occured to me that these levels fit writers and their desires along the writing journey.

I've been in the "writing world" for about three years now. What a wonderful place to grow and learn and live! It's become obvious to me that each writer is at a different place in this world.

I've met Starving Writers. This folks are wonderful in that they can talk about writing and books all day. But they also can be annoying. In their hunger, they often speed around in a marketing race car. They carry their business cards everywhere and often give them out just for the possibility of a connection that will further their goal. Starving writers are wonderful to take to lunch because the conversation is always interesting. But in a group, they tend to thrust their own marketing opportunities into conversation, even when it's not appropriate. (And yes, I have been a starving writer.)

Hungry Writers are fabulous people. Most writers I've met fall into this category. They want to learn about the business and they write not just for publication, but also to learn the craft. Hungry writers ask the best questions. In a group setting they are delightful because their eyes get wide often, either from dreaming or being inspired. (I believe today I am a hungry writer.)

Satisfied Writers are that lot of folks who don't necessarily NEED to be published again or even the first time. They write for the simple joy of writing. I love to be with satisfied writers. They often remind me that contentment in Jesus is the most important thing. Sometimes they just know their priorites, and publication is not one of them. OR they have a regular gig writing and in finding their niche, they are completely satisfied. (I find myself in this category in the summertime when I'm with Noah.)

Full Writers are ones who've just gotten a contract and are busy working to its fulfillment. And theirs. They are often writing mentors, at least the best ones are. Having found success they look for ways to help other writers - the hungry or starving especially. (I'm on my way.)

Overfull writers are those souls who just don't have time. Deadlines are approaching and they just can't seem to keep up with all the demands. They sequester themselves often to acquire that single-minded focus needed to finish. They have the experience to tell hungry writers that publication is not the end all of everything. Hungry writers smile but do not believe them. (Someday, Lord Jesus!)

Writers go through these stages consistently. I can be starving today and satisfied tomorrow. Often I'm satisfied in the summer. Noah is home and I know he is my priority. But fall comes and he goes off to school and hunger pains begin. My stomach growls for a new story, a new article to submit. Overfull writers can find a place of completion and suddenly they're starving for a new challenge.

My point is this: We are all in different phases. God has a plan and a desire for each of us, despite where we are on the hunger chart. Accepting each other, where we are, is the way to love other writers. This realization has helped me considerably in my expectations. See, if I sit down with a full writer and I am starving, I sometimes resent his/her lack of ambition and drive for the next publication. If I am hungry and talk to an overfull writer, sometimes I feel jealousy for their success.

Resentment and jealousy are thrown out of the equation if I remember that we are all individuals, in unique positions. Not every writer wants the accomplishment I WANT today. I don't want what other writers desire.

God works that way. And He is GOOD. When He created the starving, hungry, satisfied, full and overfull writers He said, "It is good. It's all good!"

Welcome Home by Kimerley Woodhouse

We are pleased to announce Kimberley Woodhouse will be speaking at Mile High Scribes on Monday, September 14th. Though we typically meet the first Monday of the month, we are moving our meeting date back one week to accommodate Labor Day celebrations.

Kim graciously agreed to answer a few questions for my writing friends here on Mile High Scribes.

1. When did you first hear the call to write?
About sixteen years ago. I didn’t tell anyone for years though.

2. How did Kayla’s diagnoses change your writing direction and/or focus.
I realized that I didn’t have to have all the answers, because I knew the One who did. He calls us to be willing vessels. Several years ago if you would have asked me if I wanted to write non-fiction, I probably would’ve laughed. The thought simply had not crossed my mind. But the Lord loves to use you in those unexpected ways. Sharing our story with all the pain, heartache, joy, and triumphs – was so hard, but it has blessed and encouraged so many people already. I’m thankful for what God is doing through the book.

3. Do you have any tips for juggling home schooling, household responsibilities and writing?
I’m a planner – sometimes to my own detriment. I think a balance between setting goals and being flexible is the key. In my home - Everyone has assigned chores that help keep the household rolling every day. Our regular schedule consists of 5-6 hours of homeschooling (I do all the teaching and prep), and 5-6 hours of swimming. I’m learning how to get writing and “business” stuff done during my kids’ swim-team practices. Then there are days when TV and radio interviews intervene and we have to be flexible. I’m still learning day-by-day how to roll with all the stuff that comes my way. My life is crazy, but I wouldn’t trade a day of it.

4. How can we pray for you and your family as you move forward in your calling?
First and foremost, please pray that the Lord is glorified through all of this. Second, please pray for the readers. The Lord knows who needs it at what time. And for us as a family, we always appreciate your prayers as we continue to deal with Kayla’s disorder and our own “normality.” We are also really praying for the book to sell well. It would be wonderful to be able to afford some kind of medical coverage for our family.

Recently, I was lassoed into a Write Out at the Broadmoor with my WFTJ writers friends. I must admit though, it didn’t take a lot of convincing. Spending the day with my favorite people is incentive enough, but when you throw in the Broadmoor , I’m hooked.

I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of work I accomplished. As social as I am, I didn’t anticipate a highly productive writing day.

“We have to do this more often,” I reflected aloud as my fingers flew over the keys.

“Um hmm,” they muttered into their laptops.

The creativity was flowing so freely, I thought of asking for a ‘to go’ box, or at the very least, another couple of days.

We are now in phase two of the Incredible Power of Prayer series and I welcome you to join us. Guideposts is launching a series of 12 books on various aspects of prayer and how people from every walk of life have been transformed through God's response to their prayers. These books will be available by mail only, sent monthly as part of a book series promotion.

You may have contributed to the first three titles in this series (Praying from the Heart, The Healing Touch, and Expecting Miracles) or perhaps to my Cup of Comfort, Life Savors, or Love Is a Verb brands. Or perhaps I'm contacting you for the first time. Whatever the case, I eagerly seek your participation in this next phase of prayer volumes.

Book four, From Tragedy to Triumph, deals with the pervasive issues related to our trials, hardships, and suffering in life, whether physical, emotional, relational, financial, etc. The focus should not be so much on the trials or the stress they cause, but on how the power of prayer eliminated or helped you deal with these trials. What lessons did prayer teach you through these ordeals and how did God use them for good for your life or others?

Book five, Refreshed by the Spirit, focuses on prayers we send to God when we are spiritually dry; when situations might be okay but we don't feel His presence; or during a dark night of the soul when life is difficult. The fault may be our own because we're not walking with the Lord, or He may seem distant because of struggles in our lives. As we continually pray for His presence, suddenly things change and we are refreshed and filled with his reassurance, peace, and joy. How did God visit you in a new way that caused praise and thanksgiving and may have even changed your life?

Book six, Love and Forgiveness, deals with relationships that have been strained or broken due to offenses against us, or our own faults. When we pray for love for those who mistreat us and pray for the willingness to seek restitution and restoration we regain our families and friends and change the hearts of our enemies. How was prayer the determining factor in a renewed love, forgiveness, and eventual restoration of relationships?

We would be pleased to consider as many stories for these three volumes as you wish to submit. We'll look at stories of up to 2,000 words and prefer that they be at least 1,000 words. The stories should have a creative title, an attention-grabbing introduction, main body with a conflict or challenge, and a clear, satisfying resolution. They need to be descriptive, rooted in time and place, compelling personal experience stories with a realistic portrayal of the people involved. They need to be stories rather than testimonies, Christian living articles, and shouldn't focus on mere feelings or mental states.

Most important, they need to revolve around prayer itself and not the circumstances of the story. These are themed books but the purpose is to convince the reader of the power of prayer in these situations.
We prefer original stories but you may also submit previously published stories that you have full rights for and are not currently in print with a major publisher. We pay $25 fo stories under 1200 words, and $50 for stories over 1200 words. You may retain the right to publish the stories in magazines and in books with less than national distribution and not carried in nationwide bookstores.

We are accepting manuscripts for all three volumes until December 15, but the sooner you submit the better your chance of acceptance. We will notify you by February and send you a permission form if your story is a finalist for any of these volumes.

Feel free to send your manuscript in normal manuscript formatting, with your full contact information—name, address, phone number, email address—and whether you're offering First Rights or Reprint Rights at the top of each manuscript. Please include a biography of 30 words or less at the end of each manuscript.

I face a constant battle as a Christian writer. One part of me desperately wants to be published and recognized for my writing. The other part desperately wants to glorify and worship the Lord with what He has given me. Thankfully, these verses help quash my ego and everything is put into perspective.

These verses not only apply to my calling as a writer, but to my other roles as wife, mother, house manager, and so on. Whatever I do, I should see it as working and serving the Lord. That includes those days of folding underwear and scrubbing toilets.

What if I don't want to do the work? I have to admit, this has been an issue lately. Other than updating my blog and sending a few e-mails, I have not been writing (I'm in so much trouble now from my writer's group). I've been putting off my writing because "my heart just isn't in it." I've allowed distractions. I've taken my focus off of God and placed it on earthly concerns.

How do I remedy an unwilling heart? I'm reminded of Romans 12:1 "Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your spiritual act of worship." Sacrificing what I want to do and focusing on what the Lord wants me to do is an act of worship. It may be difficult at first and will require discipline, but viewing my actions as worship prepares my heart for the work.

Also, it's considered an act of worship when I write for the Lord's glory and not for mine. It doesn't matter if zero people read my blog postings or if I ever become a published author, as long as I'm obedient to Him.

Dream Come True

Dreams are like morning dew, slowly dissipating in the light of day. Hour by hour, minute by minute, reality sneaks in, seeking to steal the fire, hope and the tentative fragments that comprise them. Rarely, do dreams magically appear. They must be nurtured, tended, and cared for. Dreams require a lot of work and tremendous sacrifice.

As a child, I dreamed of living on a farm in a small town. I pictured rocking on the front porch, sipping tea and watching the sun set over the wheat fields. I didn’t understand the hard work and skills needed to run a farm – or that the work began before sunrise. However, as I grew, so did my dreams. Not because I gave up on them, but because I saw life differently. Some of my life long dreams have been captured. Others are still waiting to be pursued.

I used to dream on top of my swing set or inside the highest tree I could find. The taller I was, the closer I felt to heaven. I told God all about my dreams. He didn’t think they were silly or stupid. In fact, he put those dreams in my heart.

This weekend at CCWC, after I was commissioned and anointed, the Lord gave me a word: "Dream come true." I can't wait to see what God does next! So much is stirring in my spirit.

What about you? Are you afraid to give God your dreams? Don't be. He is a wonderful dream keeper who is able and willing to make them happen. Just like He is doing for me.

While I was preparing for CCWC...

1. My Doc would not renew prescription over the phone so spent an hour of time at her office.

2. Walgreens did not receive faxed prescription so I had to return later.

3. Toilet clogged and overflowed. My DH rescued me there.

4. Dropped an entire cooler full of bottled water – a mess

5. Fan fell apart. It was old.

6. “Better than Lather” spilled all over my travel bag. Soooo much lather I finally ended up throwing it in the wash.

7. Still do not have reservations. Phone tag with the reservationist.

8. Ink ran out while printing one- sheets.

9. No appointments set up with editors/agents.

I can’t wait to see what God is going to do. Obviously, the enemy is going his best to sabotage me, but he is not going to win.

I imagine those who are going to CCWC are experiencing all sorts of distractions. Please keep us in your prayers this week. God has something awesome cooking!

Specifically:

· Traveling protection

· Wellness – I’m fighting something off

· Divine appointments

· Wisdom and Direction

· My MIL while I’m gone

· God will use me while I’m here

When I first learned about Twitter, the thought of another online group or activity was more than I could bear. Understanding my need to cut back, my BFF, Michele, talked me into Twittering while we were having coffee one day. As sure as I love Starbucks, you count on the fact that Michele has a gazillion projects going. She showed me how I could actually save time while introducing this new phenomenon – and she should know.

How does Twitter save time?

1. I send out one tweet (via text message from my phone) and all my followers get it at the same time. This saves me from texting each person individually. When my dear, sweet, grand baby was born, I twittered her progress all night long. That’s when I learned how invaluable Twitter is.

2. I’ve set my tweets to automatically update my Facebook profile so I don’t have to check in with FB each day. Now I check it weekly or just when I want to check friends’ updates.

3. I stay in touch with my network and blog less frequently so I have more time.

Other benefits of Twitter:

I tweet my new blog postings to get more traffic.
Twitter is easy – real easy. I signed up in less than ten minutes. I even signed up my 70-year-old mom and she tweets now too.
Takes less time than blogging so I can stay in touch with more of my peeps.
I twitter right from my phone - so I can tweet from anywhere I have service. I can also log in to my Twitter home page and tweet from my laptop.

Colorado Chrisitan Writers Conference 2009

Last year, I had the privileged of attending the Colorado Christian Writers Conference and it was life changing. Surrounded by the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, God spoke to my heart and redirected my writing. In fact, I've reaped the benefits from it all year long. If I find I’m out of focus, I refer back to the direction He gave me and I’m able to get back on track.

The theme this year is: Write His Answer. Isn’t that what we all long for? It’s not too late to sign up. Ask God, if He wants you to be there.

Mini Retreat at Home

My desk is clear physically, but mentally its stacked high with a load of work and it takes time away from my writing.

Therefore, I’m taking charge and am blocking off a few days for writing. I’m calling it a mini retreat. My three day retreat will be April 6^th - April 8^th. On these days, I will devote at least 8 hours to writing, praying about writing and reading about writing.

Join me won’t you? I will be in my office, with the door closed. Perhaps I’ll play an ocean sound track to drown out the noise in the house. Even though I can’t get away physically, I can create a retreat-like setting right here at home.

Dear Writer,

I’d like to invite you to be part of an exciting new series that Guideposts is sponsoring: The Incredible Power of Prayer.

You may have contributed to one or more of my story volumes in A Cup of Comfort, Life Savors, or Love is a Verb. Great! I’d love to hear from you whether you’re a previous associate or have not yet submitted anything to my projects.

Prayer is the heartbeat of the Christian life and is an amazing gift from God to us. A prayer in faith can spur God’s heart to “move mountains” on our behalf. The incredible power of prayer can accomplish miracles that go far beyond anything we humans can accomplish on our own.

Guideposts reaches millions of Americans with their upbeat message of God empowering us. And now, Guideposts is launching a series of 12 books on various aspects of prayer and how people from every walk of life have been transformed through God’s responses. These books will be mailed monthly as part of a book club promotion, and will be exclusive to this readership.

I am now collecting submissions for the first three books in the series and would welcome as many stories as you wish to submit. The first volume is Praying from the Heart and covers God answering our deeply felt prayers of great passion, sincerity, and trust. These prayers may be repentant, express deep gratitude, or describe desperate cries that lay bare a person’s deepest needs.

The second volume, The Healing Touch, deals with stories about prayers that lead to physical, spiritual, relational, or emotional healing. They may involve relationships that don’t resolve perfectly, but bring a closer relationship with God and a new sense of purpose and greater ability.

The third volume, Expecting Miracles, includes personal experience stories about audacious prayers with powerful answers. This is where the need is great and God responds extraordinarily. The answers don’t need to be purely supernatural; God can work in mysterious ways using all kinds of means.

Submissions can be up to 2000 words. Each story should have a creative title, an attention-grabbing lead, main body explaining a conflict or challenge, and a resolution. These need to be descriptive and compelling personal experience stories—not simply testimonies. We prefer original stories but you may also submit previously published stories. The payment is $25 for stories under 1000 words, and $50 for longer stories. You may retain the rights to publish the stories in magazines and books with smaller distribution sources.

We are accepting manuscripts from now until at least June 15 for the first three volumes. We’ll announce the finalists for the first volume around October 15.
Please include on each manuscript—not in headers or simply in the e-mail—your name, contact information (address, phone, e-mail, rights offered) and a bio of up to 30 words. Please attach to the e-mail rather than pasting text in the body.

Once upon a bandwagon . . .

There are a limited number of plots for stories. I can’t remember if it is seven or nine plots, but the bottom line is that’s it – no more. So we know anytime we write a story the plot will be the same as someone else’s.

Clichés all have an element of truth. That is why they are created. But, are our stories based on clichés of dozens of other authors?

I loved the first dozen or so stories I read about Amish girls trying to reconcile their place and their faith with the world. Now, I cringe when I see a book cover with a picture of a girl in an Amish wagon.

How many heroines struggle to escape their abusive athlete/lawyer/soldier/doctor/movie star husband, gain their freedom and are in love with a new athlete/lawyer/soldier/doctor/movie star at the end of the book?

How many women are “not even 100 pounds soaking wet?” How many men are strong, muscular, with wavy hair and ice-blue eyes? And, why is it only a man who looks like this can solve all a woman’s problems?

Why do a man and woman who grew up hating each other always get thrown together, discover they actually love each other, and live happily ever after?

Here’s my suggestion. Let’s jump off the bandwagons of clichéd stories, grab some material and tools, and build our own bandwagons which take these basic stories and give them new twists with well motivated characters.

Hummmm. I see a large woman teaming up with a scrawny geek. They work together to solve the problem at hand. I think I need to stop blogging and start a new novel.

Come one, come all! Brush up your writing tight skills, and enter a brand new contest. We provide the prompt; you provide the story. You get 500 words to WOW our judges with a fiction (yes, fiction) story. If you are primarily a nonfiction writer, it is vital you learn to write with fiction technique. Your nonfiction will thank you for it, and so will your future editors and publishers.

There it is. Make sure you start your story with the above words. Your neglect to do so will result in disqualification. So check, and double check.

Bit & Bridle is a Christian-owned magazine with a faith-based perspective. While we do not exclusively publish columns that make mention of Christianity, we do expect all submissions to be clean and free of foul language. Please keep this in mind before submitting any written work to the editorial team.

Who reads Bit & Bridle?

A large percentage of our readers are female between the ages of 13 and 25. Because a big portion of our readership does not own a horse, we try to include columns that will interest readers as a hobbyist alone.

What is Bit & Bridle looking to publish?

We will consider all submissions, but we will only print manuscripts that we feel display the writer’s creativity and knowledge. We prefer that writers have a basic familiarity of the horse. We also do not accept simultaneous submissions that are unrelated to our main subject. Example: We would not accept a manuscript about the parts of a tractor, but we would consider a manuscript about how the tractor is useful for manure removal and barn maintenance.

What are the general requirements?

We require that all submissions are at least 300 but not more than 2000 words in length. If you’re writing, for example, a treat recipe, 300 words would be sufficient. If you’re writing a feature story, the word length would need to be any where from 1000-2000 words. We also ask that you credit your sources when quoting information given to you from another person or website. In addition, please avoid borrowing any copyrighted text without the owner’s permission. It is not necessary for you to double space your work, but we do ask that you try to use correct spelling and writing style. The better your manuscript looks, the more likely your chances are to be selected.

We are more than happy to take a look at any type of generic horse, farm, or outdoor shots. We do not consider photography that is unrelated to the purpose of our magazine (horses). We will consider scenic shots providing that they have some type of equine theme. You may also email us for current requests. **Please do NOT send edited photos that have text or unnatural edits.**

Applicants must live within their community and have a desire to discover and write about news events therein. A degree in journalism is not necessary, just the ability to write about and possibly photograph newsworthy events. Training will be provided. Three Reasons to Enter the 2009 Genesis Contest

It’s that time of year again. The ACFW Genesis Contest is officially open for entries. I’ve entered the Genesis Contest two years in a row and I plan to enter again this year. There are three main reasons why I think it’s such a valuable experience:

You can get your writing out there. If you want to be a writer, you’ve got to get your work out there. Allowing people to read your writing is not only intimidating, it’s downright difficult. It means being vulnerable and opening yourself up to criticism. But it’s so important. For me, entering the contest has been a significant growth experience, and has given me the opportunity to get my work in front of agents and editors. All finalist entries are judged by professionals in the publishing business. You never know … one of them might like what they see.

You can get honest, anonymous feedback. Each time I have entered the Genesis Contest, I have received insightful feedback that has helped shape my writing. Last year, as a finalist, one of the judges included very practical advice that helped me improve the manuscript to the point that it actually won first place in a Romance Writers of America contest a few months later. The best thing about the judging is that it’s completely anonymous, so you know the judges are making their assessments based solely on your writing.

You can start getting used to subjectivity. I know this is one of the biggest complaints about entering contests. One judge may score you really high while another scores you really low and it can be hard to reconcile the two responses. But it is also a great exercise for learning how to process feedback. Someday, when you are a published author, you’ll receive feedback from your readers. Readers coming from different cultures, different walks of life, different viewpoints. Writing is subjective. The best thing we can do is learn to be open to others’ ideas and opinions, prayerfully consider how each comment should impact our writing, and graciously use criticism as tool for growth in our writing as well as in our lives.

Last year, I had the privileged of attending the Colorado Christian Writers Conference and it was life changing. Surrounded by the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, God spoke to my heart and redirected my writing. In fact, I've reaped the benefits from it all year long. If I find I’m out of focus, I refer back to the direction He gave me and I’m able to get back on track.

The theme this year is: Write His Answer. Isn’t that what we all long for? To write the novel He wants you to write; write for the publications He wants you to write for; and write the passions He put in your heart? Then you won’t want to miss this conference. Dogs have always been considered companions and playmates that brighten and enrich our lives but they are also wonderful and amazing teachers. The lessons we learn from our canine friends come in all shapes and sizes, just like they do. In this book, we are asking dog lovers to share the lessons they have learned from our greatest heroes and healers. The stories we are looking for should be inspirational, joyous, poignant, or amusing about the valuable, heartwarming, and often funny, lessons we have learned from our loyal pets.

We are looking for true stories and poems written in the first person of no more than 1,200 words. Stories can be serious or humorous, or both. Remember, these stories should be about lessons learned from your dog rather than general stories about your dog.

Stepping Out of the Closet

Are you working on a secret manuscript? Are you longing to be published, but afraid to step out? Are you a closet writer? For many years I was a closet writer. I didn’t tell anyone I wrote because I was afraid to commit. I was worried they’d ask about my work and keep me accountable.

Several years ago, I decided to come out of the closet and become a serious writer.

These are the steps I took:
• Introduced myself as a writer
• Joined a writers group
• Took a professional head shot
• Printed business cards
• Attended writers Conference
• Kept regular writing hours
• Submitted Manuscripts

The result? In 2008, I was published in the Nov/Dec issue of Pray! magazine and wrote 7 devotionals for Devotion magazine which will be published in July 2010. I’ve been published before, but these were my first paid publications.

This year, I’ve begun a fiction manuscript. It’s official – now everyone knows. What about you? Are you ready to step out of the closet? What are you working on in 2009?
